Fishing report: Cooler water temperatures improve trout fishing

Here are some highlight from the fishing report that will appear in Saturday’s Sports section.

Rivers

Cowlitz: The summer-run steelhead fishing has been slow, but it is expected to pick up in the next couple of weeks as more fish move into the system.

Sol Duc: The river wiil close to all fishing in the vicinity of Sol Duc Hatchery Saturday. The closure, in place until further notice, extends from the Sol Duc Hatchery outfall creek upstream to the concrete pump station. The return of spring/summer chinook salmon to the hatchery are well below egg take needs. The closure is needed to protect these chinook until broodstock needs are achieved.

Skykomish: The river is still producing chinook. There are plenty of bright fish willing to put up a fight. Anglers also are catching a few big summer-run steelhead. The action has been best from Sultan down river to Monroe. Try sidedrifting eggs.

Yakima: The fly fishing has been good this week. Try caddis, yellow Sallys and terrestrial pattersns. Also look for summer stoneflies hatching. Flows have steadily risen during the week, reacing 4,000 cubic feet per second Friday morning.

Salt water

Fly fishing: The action for searun cutthroat through remains good in Puget Sound with some big fish being caught consistently. Anglers also are finding some small schools of resident coho salmon close to shore.

South Sound: The chinook action has improved in the last week, with fish being caught at a number of locations around Tacoma. Trolling flashers with hoochie and spoons has been effective. In Marine Area 13, an angler landed a 24-pound chinook.

Lakes

American: Anglers are catching a mix of rainbow trout and kokanee. The best action has been trolling with a pink dodger trailed by a pink hoochie or lure. Reports indicate the fish are holding about 30 feet deep. One angler reported catching a 3-pound kokanee.

Mineral: Anglers have been catching some nice rainbow trout, including a 6-pound fish. Try trolling a black woolly bugger with red flash material. Fishing pink Power Eggs off the bottom also is an effective method.

Offut: The trout fishing has been fair to good. The fish have been hitting garlic Power Eggs, nightcrawlers or spinners tipped with a nightcrawler. Some of the trout are weighing up to 2 pounds.

Silver: The action has been best for warmwater species like catfish in the shallows, largemouth bass hanging in the weeds and crappie in the evening. The trout are hanging in the cooler water on the bottom.
